The Stereotype is True

This explains some things about me except the Harley part…

Apple vs. PC, the stereotypes are true:

(CNN) — Remember those Apple ads that cast the Mac as a 20-something, self-satisfied hipster while the PC was portrayed by an older, square-looking guy in a brown suit?

Well, those characterizations, unfair as they may be, appear to have some truth to them.

An unscientific survey by Hunch, a site that makes recommendations based on detailed user preferences, found that Mac users tend to be younger, more liberal, more fashion-conscious and more likely to live in cities than people who prefer PCs….

The report found that 67% of Mac users have a college or advanced degree, as opposed to 54% of PC users. Mac loyalists are 80% more likely than PC users to be vegetarians, and, unlike PC fans, would rather ride a Vespa scooter than a Harley.

PC users’ tastes trend towards casual clothes, tunafish sandwiches, white wine, Hollywood movies, USA Today and Pepsi. Mac users prefer designer or vintage duds, hummus, red wine, indie films, The New York Times and (we’re not making this up) San Pellegrino Limonata.

Yep that would be me…

Change Is Good

The biggest change as of late is that I have converted from TypePad to WordPress. You think ya “big change” Dave… but as a blogger this is huge! I faithfully used TypePad for a number of years. It served me well. But I needed something a little more robust. I have been researching it for months and new I needed someone to help me with the conversion. Thanks Daniel Davidson.

So here are my current blogging tools:

  • WordPress—This blogging platform comes in two forms: hosted and self-hosted. “Hosted” means that you sign up for an account on WordPress.com and they host your blog. If you are just starting out, this is the way to go. It is free and easy to use. At this level, I think WordPress and TypePad are comparable.“Self-hosted” means that you sign up for a hosting service and then install WordPress on your own server. This is what I have done. I am using sibername for hosting. They have the best customer service of any organization I have ever seen. They respond to my help desk questions within 10 min. They are amazing!!
  • I like WordPress because it is open source and easily extensible. It has a vast army of programmers who write themes and plugins for the platform. There is something for everyone. If you want to customize and tweak your blog, so that you get it just the way you envision, WordPress is the way to go. I’m sure you can do almost the same thing in TypePad, but I found it increasingly difficult to get it the way I wanted.
  • My blog loads much faster. I am told the code is just tighter and better written (like I know what that means).
  • My blog is easier to administer. The backend of the theme—the part where you manipulate how the blog is displayed to your readers—is really simple and easy to use. It is intuitive, allowing you to customize nearly every aspect of my readers’ experience. It took almost zero time for me to get up-to-speed.
  • I love the ease and look of  Standard Theme. If you are looking for a premium theme, I highly recommend Standard Theme. The guys at 8Bit are constantly improving it, and they have a great community of users for support and ideas.

The Next Wave of Communication

google_wave_logoI am excited about Google Wave.  Usually wouldn’t post a link to a video that is over one hour in length, but this is monumental and a presentation of a product that will redefine the way we communicate through email, IM, SMS, blogs, and other means. It appears to be the most powerful communication and collaboration tool ever.  Meet the product known as GOOGLE WAVE, the next big thing. Wow.

I’m already brainstorming how the church will be able to use this. Google will roll it out in the next few months.
